This month's focus is:    SERVICE

FES

During April’s spotlight on the character trait of Courage, Firelands Elementary honored the courageous individuals who are in charge of public safety.  Representatives from the County Ambulance Service, Lorain County Sheriff’s Department and the Florence Twp. Volunteer Fire Department spent the day at FES talking to students about their jobs and how they require courage. Students were able to ask questions and tour the vehicles that they use in their jobs.

We would like to give special thanks to all of the volunteers who took time out of their day to come give us some valuable information!  From the sheriff's department, we had Deputy Curtis; from the Central Lorain County Ambulance District we had Paramedics Jon Osterman and Rick Kenny; and from the Florence Twp. Fire Dept. we had Lt./Safety Officer Tim Born, FF Cevin Milas, FF Kevin Eichelburger, FF/EMT Kurt Scholl, and FF/Paramedic Sean Finnegan.  They all did an excellent job!

SAMS

Service to others is a major component to quality Character Education.  SAMS culminated its Character Education program by each grade level completing a service project.

The 8th grade class conducted a service project to collect canned food for second harvest (the Lorain County Food Bank). The 8th graders brought in over 1000 cans of food. The final donation to the food bank was over 840 pounds of food and was delivered on Friday June 4th. To add an extra bit of fun a challenge was set forward, the team that brought in the most food would be served lunch by the team that brought in the fewest can. The teams were the boys against the girls. The young ladies of the eighth grade proved that they were more than up to the challenge easily defeating the boys by more than 300 cans of food. So Monday June 7th they enjoyed the sweet taste of victory as they dine being served by the eighth grade boys.

The 7th grade students worked with the Friendship APL of Lorain County as their public service project.  During May the students will be engaged in many activities to learn about and support this organization.  A representative from the APL came to visit SAMS and give a presentation to the 7th grade class.   Work and Family baked “dog biscuits”  that were  delivered to the shelter.   Computer classes created labels for the animal treats, and art classes designed posters in support of the APL.  Students, accompanied by a parent, were given two opportunities to volunteer at the APL.  Walking dogs, cleaning cages, and visiting the cats are just a few of the jobs we helped with.  Some of our students are becoming trained to become long term volunteers for the APL!

The 6th grade students gave back by adding service time into their daily schedule while attending the sixth grade outdoor adventure.  The sixth grade students did various task to help clean-up and prepare the camp grounds for the 2010 season.  The students cleaned up debris from the beach, clear brush from a walking path, clean up trash that blew into the woods during the winter, clean up the wetland trails, and to complete any other task asked of us by the camp administration.  The Beulah Beach staff were very happy and appreciative of our students and their efforts.

Thank you to all the students who gave back to their community and to the organizations that let our young people learn a valuable life lesson of service to others!
